The service behind Javabean Hosting is beyond outstanding. Sometime in the past month I made a complete bonehead move: I deleted all my RW files (that was good since I wanted to do a fresh publish), but at the same time I also deleted all the files related to any media I used and my forum database! Yikes. What happened? In less than 90 minutes (and this was early evening Pacific Standard Time) my lost media and forum files had been reinstalled by one of the nightly backups Greg makes. 90 minutes. At night. This one really is a game-changer and gives a whole new meaning to the concept of "RapidWeaver friendly hosting", which has become somewhat of a cliché recently. The new JavaBean Hosting plugin can be added to your RapidWeaver projects. It provides an exceptionally intuitive user interface, to get account statistics, status and documentation relating to your hosting account. It really does bridge the gap between RapidWeaver and webhosting. Nothing else like this has been developed before, and it is a pretty exciting little plugin.
I got fed up with middleman, affiliate-driven hosting companies some months ago. My websites were expanding, traffic was increasing week-on-week and I learnt the hard way that 99% uptime guarantees we frequently hear touted only often applies to websites themselves, and not backend databases or PHP! To cut a long story short, I had enough of these big-business hosts. In my opinion, their business models are just not sustainable anymore, and the cost of that ultimately gets passed down to end users in the form of security breaches and frequent crashes. It was evident I was just a number on their innovatory, rather than a real customer. At the time, Greg Barchard hinted that he would be starting up a new hosting company, and asked if I wanted to be one of the first customers on the books. So I jumped at the idea and switched to Javabean hosting last year. Needless to say, it was clearly one of the best decisions I have made in a long time. The speed, reliability and customer service has to be experienced to be believed.
Sure, there are several companies around that boast unlimited bandwidth and unlimited disk space for $10 a month or less. But what happens if you hit a problem trying to get your RapidWeaver website published online? Similarly, how do you know that new RapidWeaver plugin or stack you are about to buy will work with your web server? What FTP settings do you need to use in RapidWeaver? As a RapidWeaver developer, I have witnessed some people on the receiving end of the most abysmal customer service humanly possible from some web hosts. The sad truth is even a certain hosting company that claims to be the "Official RapidWeaver Web Hosting Partner" failed to diagnose basic contact form issues, and once misinformed a customer that a basic publishing problem was the result of a bad RapidWeaver theme begin used, rather than a simple typo in the FTP settings. And honestly, a host that does not support WeaverBox or WeaverFM plugins is not very "RapidWeaver friendly" by my standards! So choosing the correct host is a vital decision to take carefully. Simply put, the success of your website depends on it being available for the world to see. It's a no-brainer, but a factor that unfortunately frequently gets overlooked in favour of price tags. So with this in mind, JavaBean hosting gets a vote from me.
Back to the plugin again, currently it only works with JavaBean Hosting. I think that is intentional and will stay that way for now. Using the new JavaBean Hosting plugin, I can log into my hosting account directly from within RapidWeaver, and can check my bandwidth and lookup what FTP settings I need to be using in RapidWeaver. I can also check the more complicated settings and inspect the server logs. Plenty of documentation is included, and both novice users and seasoned experts will be comfortable reading the different topics. The JavaBean Hosting plugin is split into four main categories:
